First of all i'll just say that one of my freinds had the same problem with
the SB Live! card,
and he fixed it with updating the drivers for the live card.

But your problem sound alot like my problem ....
Just for testing:

1) Does windows still crash if you install the VGA-standard drivers for your
GRAPHIC card, and then enable you live card ?
2) Does windows still crash if you set the hardware acceleration to the
lowest for your graphic card, but still have both cards enabled, and running
with right drivers ?
(You can set the hardware acceleration to the lowest in : Control
panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Performance)

If you can say no to both (windows doesn't crash in either test 1 or test
2), then it sound alot like my problem :]

BTW my freind first got his problem when he updated from windws98 to
windws98SE (it worked very fine in windows98).

For me it sound like a driver problem, but the creative guys havn't been
able to help me yet :(

Since you have a SB Live! card and not a pci512 card (like me), you could
try to update the drivers, if you havn't tryed it yet.
