I'm having a similar problem.  My playcenter worked until (I think) I 
installed Media Player 7.  I'm not sure, but I think before then if I 
tried to explore a Audio CD I didn't see any files.  Now when I use 
explorer to browse the CD I see a 44 byte file for each song.  Also 
playcenter indicates that there is "no valid audio cd."

I've got windows 98 and last week I could play and rip cds with 
playcenter and now I can't so I know its some sort of install that I 
did.  I've tried uninstalling media player but it still won't work (both 
with and without a reinstall of playcenter).
