microphone volume too low on sb 512

when i use my headset with the sb 512, even with maxed volume settings in volume control, the input level of my microphone is too low. 

the microphone itself worked fine with a nonem 16 bit soundcard before even with medium input level settings.

but with the 512, even with maxed volume control settings, i'm barely understandable while using battlecom or simirlar voicecom products.

is there any way to fix this?
