You need an Opticoupler.  It's the thing that goes between your keyboard and
your sound card.  SBLive! has one at their website for about $29.00 under
accesories/pc cards or you can find schematics on the net (searchword
"midi") to build your own.  Its function is to change electrical impulses to
light, then back to electrical again to protect your hardware.  I haven't
seen it mentioned too often.  I learned by trial and error.  I bought the
connector mini board for SBLive! Value and it works great.
