I had a similar problem with an Acer CD-ROM drive. I
suddenly could not read CD's I could read previously, and
those CD's that were intermittent didn't work at all. Since a
CD-ROM drive is just like an audio CD Player, I took the
CD-ROM drive apart (long out of warranty) and with a
cotton swab, I cleaned the optic very lightly with some
Compact Disc Cleaning Fluid which came with a CD Cleaner
I bought years ago. After that, the CD-ROM drive had no
problem accessing every CD I own.
Note: I do not suggest doing this with power applied
to the drive as the laser can cause eye damage. Be very
careful when cleaning the lens. Let the cleaning solution
do the work. You just need to swab it and maybe even
lightly swirl it on the lens to remove dust particles. I have
resurrected one CD-ROM drive, and one boom box CD
Player doing this.
Of course, your CD-ROM drive may be too old and unable
to read CD-R's or CD-R/W's. You'll have to check the
manufacturer's specs on that. Good Luck!
