In the _recording_ mixer, select something other than "What-U-Hear" as
the recording source. This has to do with there being only one output
to the EMU10K1 from the (Intel-designed) AC'97 codec which has to serve
both playback and recording purposes. Your recording selection (if it
is analog) can be sent to the EMU10K1 for recording and the others you
can then select can be mixed with the EMU10K1's playback output within
the AC'97. Setting Digital-Output-Only allows some more flexiblity in
setting up the AC'97 because it doesn't matter what happens to come
out of it then. This whole mess also affects which analog inputs can
have effects applied to them, including whether the tone controls have
an effect.
