[crossposted to cs.forum,cuhk.forum,hk.genral] What lesson can we learn from the fire on Headquarter of Credit Lyonnais, Paris ? All equipment are gone, but thanks god (i.e. the system administrators :-) they have remote backup for all data. They can resume business almost immediately. How about our own backup ? I know many organizations in Hong Kong (apart from those using Mainframes) have a rather optimistic backup policy: they put they backup tape in the cabinets in the same offices, but not in remote sites. These backup policies can withstand system crashes but not fires which are _not_ that unlikely. The data in our servers are not less important to us than the customers account data to Credit Lyonnais. Rgds, LEE, Yui-wah (Clement) Hong Kong
