Interested in Men's or Women's Baseball?
Melbourne University Baseball Club, established in 1926, runs five open
teams in the Victorian Winter Baseball League, and one women's team in
the Victorian Baseball Association.
The men's teams play in the VWBL Winter A Grade, A Reserve, A Thirds,
and A Fourths. We also have a social side that plays in Winter C
Grade. The MUBC women's side plays in the VBA Winter women's
competition. In 1996, the side's first year, the team were premiers.
Membership in MUBC is open to all current and past M.U. students, current
M.U. staff, students of other teritary institutions that do not play
baseball, and graduates of other tertiary institutions.
(That is, anyone who meets the M.U. Sports Union eligibility criteria).
MUBC is a strong club both on and off the field. The club is fortunate
enough to have good training facilities, both at the University, and at
its home ground of Ross Straw Field, off Manningham St in Royal Park,
augmented by top-level coaching from one of the state's leading baseball
coaches. On the field, teams regularly contest and win finals, including
several A grade pennants.
MUBC also sends a team annually to contest in intervarsity competition at
the Australian University Games, winning consistently. (Both the baseball
and the boat races!) Socially, the club is strong, with regular functions
and activities throughout the year.
Where is it?
Home games are played on the club's ground, Ross Straw Field, in Royal
Park. Training is split between Ross Straw Field (on weekends), and the
University hockey field (during the week).
When is it?
Women's games are on Sunday afternoons, from Sunday April 20th. Men's
games are on Saturday afternoons, from Saturday April 19th. Games are at
1:00pm (single headers), or 12:30pm and 3:00pm (double headers). The
season runs from late April through to August, with finals in September.
During the season, training is on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm to
7.30pm on the University hockey field, and from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in
the Beaurepaire Gymnasium, and on Sundays from 10:00am to 12:00 midday
at Ross Straw Field in Royal Park. There are extra hitting sessions on
Tuesdays and Thursdays for the women's and men's teams, respectively.
Pre-season training starts on Saturday March 1st, and is on Wednesdays
(as above), and Saturdays 9:00am to 12:00 midday at Ross Straw Field,
Royal Park.
At the end of pre-season each year, the club holds its `oldies/youngies'
game and BBQ the last Sunday before the season, followed by a Pie Night
the Wednesday before the first round.
Fees
Fees are quite reasonable and in 1997 are $40 for M.U. students, $160 for
non M.U.-students, and $180 for others. This cost includes Sports Union
membership of $120 which entitles members to full use of the University
sporting facilities such as weight rooms, pool, squash courts, and tennis
courts.
