                        RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

COMPILATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF CONSTRAINT LOGIC PROGRAMS

                 The Machine Intelligence Project

                University of Melbourne, Australia

A research fellow or programmer is sought to work in the area of
compilation and optimization of constraint logic programs. The
position is funded for three years by The Australian Research Council.
The salary ranges are:

	Research fellow 1:	AUD 26,400 - 36,700
	Research fellow 2:	AUD 38,500 - 46,000
	Programmer: AUD 36,225 - 41,374

We are asking for expressions of interest in any of these categories.
You should have a good knowledge of (constraint) logic programming and
preferably some experience with the implementation of programming
languages. A research fellow 2 will be expected to hold a PhD or
similar degree.
You will be working closely with other members in the project group.
We hope to develop and implement a series of optimizing transformations
for constraint logic programs, in particular CLP(R) programs.

About the group:
----------------
The Machine Intelligence Project was established seven years ago and has
resulted in the systems MU-Prolog and NU-Prolog. Today the main research
directions are: deductive databases (the Aditi system), parallel logic
programming, constraint logic programming and programming environments.
The group is now located in the Collaborative Information Technology
Research Institute (CITRI) which includes other research groups from
The University of Melbourne and The Royal Melbourne Inst. of Technology.
The principal researchers in the project are: Prof. Rao Kotagiri,
Dr. Lee Naish, Dr. Zoltan Somogyi, Dr. Harald Sondergaard and Dr. Peter
Stuckey. In addition, there are some five research associates or
assistants working in the group, together with research students.

Application and enquiries:
--------------------------
We hope to fill the position by 1 July 1992. Expressions of interest
should be sent before 15 March 1992 to the following address and should
include a full curriculum vitae.
