CS and UMIACS will sponsor a picnic at Acredale Park on Friday,
September 26 beginning at 12:30pm. All department and UMIACS faculty
members, staff, and graduate students as well as family members are
invited to attend.  The event is to welcome new and returning graduate
students and provide everyone with an opportunity to socialize.  

The park can be reached by a 5-10 minute walk using the path at the rear
of this building. We have contracted with a company to handle the
cooking so that everyone can enjoy themselves. Food will be served for a
two hour period but we have reserved the park for the entire afternoon.
The following committees have been formed and we encourage you to
volunteer.  Please send email to the appropriate committee chair if you
are interested in helping:

1.  Matt Katsouros (mattkat@cs.umd.edu) - A "games committee"  needs to
be formed so that people can participate in team sports.   Please
contact Matt with your ideas and let him know if you have sports
equipment that we can borrow. 

2.  Adelaide Findlay (adelaide@cs.umd.edu) - A "clean-up committee" is
needed to check the grounds and make sure trash has not been left on
tables.  The caterer will handle their own clean-up. 

3.  Brenda Chick (brenda@cs.umd.edu) will handle decorations and will
take pictures.  We would really like someone from UMIACS to do the same
so if there is a budding photographer, please let either of us know. We
hope to have the pictures posted to a web site following the event.

Our tentative estimate is that 250 people will attend but it would be
helpful to have an approximate head count to be sure that there is
sufficient food. Staff and faculty members, please let me know if you
plan to attend and will be bringing family members. Graduate students,
please contact Jenny Story providing her with the same information and
UMIACS personnel should contact Edna.  I will need a head count by
September 17.

There are picnic tables scattered around the pavilion that will seat
approximately 100 people, so we encourage everyone to bring folding
chairs and blankets. Department offices will be closed that afternoon.
Casual dress is in order and we would like to see a large turnout.  Let
me know if you have questions.  Following is the menu which includes
both meat and vegetarian options.

Acredale Park is just North of campus on Metzerott Road.  The quickest
way to get there from campus by car is to head North on Paint Branch
Drive, take a right on University Blvd., and a quick right on Metzerott.

Since parking is limited at the park, we are encouraging people to walk.
It doesn't take much longer than driving.  Just head North on the
bicycle trail behind the AV Williams Bldg; bear left at the dog park
towards the road.  We'll be at the brick pavilion.
