TITLE: Saliency-Guided Graphics and Visualization
ABSTRACT: Recent research in visual saliency has established a
computational model of perceptual importance. Although much work has been
done in incorporating principles of perception in processing of images, its
scope has not been fully explored in 3D graphics and visualization
applications. In this dissertation, we show that the model of saliency
inspired by the human visual system is greatly helpful in analyzing and
rendering of 3D datasets. We use principles of saliency to enhance the
depiction, manage visual attention, and increase interactivity of graphics
and visualization applications. We first validate a previous model of
saliency by comparing it with human eye movements. We next present a novel
visual-saliency-based operator to enhance selected regions of interest both
in volume datasets and in 3D meshes. Further, we show that finding salient
repetitive patterns can be used to improve the interactivity of graphics
applications. Finally, we extend the notion of saliency into time-varying
datasets such as molecular dynamics simulations, and identify the most
salient time frames for summarization.
