A NEW APPROACH TO DATA REDUCTION

This talk will briefly review various approaches to
dimensionality reduction of high-dimensional data
sets and will then describe a new approach to this
problem which is based on picking projections of the
high-dimensional system which are especially easy to
invert. The talk will cover the basic theory of
approach (essentially motivated by Whitney's
embedding theorem), give an algorithm for finding the
projections, discuss the construction of the inverse
projection and illustrate the whole with some numer-
ical examples.

This work has been done in collaboration with Dave
Broomhead, Department of Mathematics, UMIST, England.
