In defense of our oft-maligned systems staff, I'd like to point out the
relative abundance of machines
here due in no large part to the resourcefulness and hard work of the
staff and faculty. Wayne Trzyna
worked hard to get the new Ultras purchased when Sun offered a good deal
recently, and I think he is
to be commended for it. Steve Seidman, previous chairmen and faculty work
hard to obtain donations
regularly from HP (and many judos to HP for their support to the
department over the years). Research machines are purchased from grants
awarded in response to proposals carefully written by faculty over long
periods; these machines reduce significantly the load on machines used in
support
of our courses.
Recently, I showed a graduate student from University of Delaware around
our department. He was extremely impressed by the number and caliber of
the machines here. Admittedly, we have a lot of demand and do not have
enough machines for everything we would like to do (but could we ever?
:-).
In any event, next time you are looking around for a machine to use, why
not take a second or two and think how fortunate we are to have so many
available. In fact, try doing some back of the envelope calculations
about how much money in resources you have at your finger tips, you might
be surprised at the results...
From my perspective (and comparing it to what I hear from colleagues at
other schools), we are pretty darned lucky to have the systems and
support that we have.
