ROCKET SCIENCE AT MTU--BUILDING A
COMPILER RETARGETABLE FOR INSTRUCTION-
LEVEL PARALLEL ARCHITECTURES
Given the inclusion of instruction-level parallelism
(ILP) into modern computer designs and the ever-shortening
time to market for computers, a retargetable compiler
capable of generating optimized code for a broad range of
ILP architectures should be a useful tool. This talk will
focus on the Rocket project, an attempt to build such a
retargetable ILP compiler.
In addition to giving a brief overview of Rocket's goals
and code generation strategies, we will investigate design
decisions faced when building such a retargetable compiler,
classify optimizations based upon their degree of architec-
tural dependence, and evaluate design decisions made in the
Rocket compiler.
