COLLABORATION TECHNOLOGY: MODELS AND SYSTEMS
Workflow technology has been steadily gaining in
popularity--it can now be found everywhere from the
White House in Washington, D.C. to food stands in
Beijing, China. This talk will begin by briefly
introducing, with examples, the concepts of collab-
orative computing and workflow.
What are the research issues in this discipline?
What is the future of workflow? What are the
obstacles? We will then present a conceptual meta-
model that includes communication, coordination,
interface, and ontological aspects of collaborative
computing systems. The second half of the talk will
explain research work ongoing within the Collaboration
Technology Research Group at the University of
Colorado to build a future generation workflow pro-
totype. As an example of ongoing research, we will
discuss the "dynamic change/exception handling"
problem that is currently unsolved in the research
forefront. We will conclude the talk by listing
some potential barriers to the success of future
collaboration technology.
Dr. Clarence (Skip) Ellis is a Professor of
Computer Science, faculty member of the Institute
for Cognitive Science, and Co-Director of the
Collaboration Technology Research Group at the
University of Colorado.
