No left channel audio from cd player.

I have a computer that won't play left channel audio from the cd player.
Sound plays fine (both channels) from a .wav file, but cd's only play on the
right speaker.

I plugged the speakers directly into to output jack on the front of the cd
drive with the same effect (no left speaker).  What could this be, and
please don't tell me it's the whole cd rom drive.  A cable I can replace,
but no the whole drive.  :)
