Now we move on to memory.
We have stuff I know:
SIMM
DIMM
72-pin
168-pin
And stuff I don't know:
PC100 SDRAM
EDO
ECC
ECC Registered
These are different memory technologies that maximize speed, right?
So should I just ignore them and look at the speed? What's the
difference
between a PC100 SDRAM with a 10ns speed, an SDRAM with 10ns speed and
a
DRAM with 10ns speed?
And what's the config. There's 32x72 & 16x72 & 8x64, etc., etc. What
does this have to do with anything? If it's a 168-pin DIMM, I can put
it in my 168-pin DIMM slot, right?
And what about max memory capacity on the MB. One says it has 4x168-pin
DIMM + 2x72-pin SIMM slots with a 512MB max capacity. Another has
3x168-pin DIMM slots with a 768MB max capacity. Why couldn't I just
fill the 4 DIMM slots from the first one with 256MB DIMMs to get
1024MB? How does fewer DIMM slots=more max memory? Maybe a BIOS or
chipset thing? Is this really a maximun DIMM capacity for each slot?
And DIMMs don't have to come in pairs like SIMMs, right?
And what about Ultra DMA/33? I know what DMA is, but they all seem to
have Ultra DMA/33? I suppose that's because it's good, but is there
anything else that's better? Anything else that I should avoid?
BTW, I'm not actually planning on buying a new system too soon, at least
not for myself. I'm putting together a web page entitled Linux From
Scratch, just for fun and education.
The problem: New computers come standard with MS-Windows, which I'm sure
you
pay for.
Solution: To get the price benefit of Linux, you have to put the 'puter
together yourself.
The web page will eventually be a buying guide and hardware assembly
tutorial with "dirt-cheap" to "Won the lottery" examples. No URL yet.
If anyone wants to help author it, let me know.
