I don't know what happened, but I've apparently lost my font server, or at least my default fonts, so I am unable to start X. I get the following error message: _FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111 failed to set default fontpath 'unix/:-1' Fatal server error: Could not open default font 'fixed' Upon start up, the font server starts, but when I do a shutdown after trying to start X, it says that it failed to shutdown, and INND also fails to shut down. I checked my XF86Config file, and it has: Font Path "unix/:-1" After reading several FAQ's and a bunch of posts in ng, I have checked a few things. I have fonts/misc:unscaled and fonts/misc in the catalogue line of the proper file. Someone suggested doing a df command. I don't know why, but here it is: 1-K blocks Used avail used mount /dev/hdc2 63917 60920 0 100% / /dev/hdc4 6754013 23764 6380322 0% /home /dev/hdc3 1090007 891133 142552 86% /usr I am running Redhat 6.0 on a POS Packard Bell I may have forgotten a few things, so if you need more info let me know. (It's 2:30 in the morning, and I can't think straight anymore) Any help on fixing this would be appreciated. Lynx is okay for browsing, but I would really like to get X running. Basically, when programs can't write temp files and other things, bad stuff happens. Not surprisingly however, the kernel keeps going quite happily, and doesn't even tell you that there's a problem, because in its view, there isn't. Well, actually, you'd probably see error messages in the logs, but unlike windows, it doesn't pop up an alert window for every little thing. -- Adam Carheden carheden@holly.ColoState.EDU

Er... you /would/ see stuff in the logs, except you have no room to write them. Its a lose-lose situation. Groovy. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Michael J. Okay, now I feel stupid. Hopefully I was at least right about the lack of disk space causing X not to load. -- Adam Carheden carheden@holly.ColoState.EDU

I went back and repartitioned and gave root a tad more than 64Mb. I can't believe I did that in the first place. I had originally tried 500Mb, but I got a message that the partition was too large, so I dropped it to 64, and it allowed the partition. The problem was, I didn't have a separate boot partition. Once I made a separate boot partion, 10Mb, root at 1000Mb, plus a couple more partitions, things worked fine. Actually, the logs were fine up until January 8 or so. I had been getting system email since then saying "Can't write file. No room left on device" but I ignored them. My mistake. You can ignore windoze errors, but if Linux says you have a problem, it _really_ means it! I know e, but no F. Or do you just mean 0xf? -- Adam Carheden carheden@holly.ColoState.EDU
