A few months ago slashdot had and article/link on the Juggernaut search engine. It's a GPLd web crawler in perl. I visited the web page once, about 3 weeks ago, and I liked it. Today, when I went to download it, I get a DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. when I try to access their site. The URL is: http://www.juggernautsearch.com/cgi-jugger/juggernaut.cgi What does this mean? What could cause someone to lose their DNS entry (excluding doing something stupid like not paying cough... microsoft... cough... hotmail... cough, cough). Could it be a local problem with CSU DNS servers, or did I miss my chance. I can't find anything about it on google either. If anyone did download this, could I get a copy? -- Adam

I've seen a /lot/ of times when the DNS call will timout before a reply makes it back. On the second call, though, the name is all cached up, and returns pretty quickly. Its a growing problem, if I see things right... but I don't know what caused it. I started having this problem about two years ago, and recently, its been happening on my servers at work... <shrug> The Internet is getting too crowded... -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Michael J. I guess I do ask a lot of stupid questions on this newsgroup (once I asked what an ATM card was...), has it earned me a reputation? Yes, of course I've tried it twice. And twice again. And again this morning. Is there a way to set the timeout on an nslookup (I'm setting at an NT box here, no man pages)? Netscape waits about 10 seconds before it gives me an error message. Is it trying multiple times, or does it set a longer timeout? The good news is that whois reveals that juggernautsearch.com is registered with Network Solutions and was last updated 23-sep-1999. It reveals two nameservers (ns[1|2].playmate.nu), neither of which respond to a ping. Okay, now something new is happening. nslookup waits for 55.62 seconds and responds that juggernautsearch.com doesn't exist. A traceroute to either of the nameservers completes the 1st 14 hops successfully, drops the middle packet on the 15th hop, and drops all three packets for hops 16-30. The 1st and 3rd packets on the 15th hop completed in 30/35 ms. The 15th hop is gige-g9-0.gsr12012.sjc.he.net The first two octets of it's IP match those of the nameservers. he.net is Hurricane Electric Internet Services and they're running apache. I've e-mail their tech support. Anyone have any more ideas for me. I'll be dammed if I have to write my own robot. Anyone know of another free robot for perl or something I can run on win32? -- Adam

I was just wondering if it was possibly that problem. I'll see what I can find about the DNS thing once I'm on my own servers. If there is a way to set the nslookup timout, I'd like to know it. I fear, however, that it wouldn't help, owing to the recursive nature of DNS. Your request would just timout somewhere else... : I'll be dammed if I have to write my own robot. Anyone know of another : free robot for perl or something I can run on win32? I dunno if its ported to Win32 yet (I assume it is) but the Excite engine is avaialbe. It doesn't show up prominently on their web page anymore, but I can probably drop the link to you after I get to the office. Forgive the english, typing, etc. Windows telnet, vi, and high latency. : -- : Adam -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Michael J. Okay, not this is getting scary. I couldn't find ctoons.com this morning. The first nslookup gave me a Non-existant host/domain. A 2nd one a few minutes later gave me a no (A) record available. A lookup for www.ctoons.com says Non-existant host/domain. Now, this is an address I've visited every day for the past two years. juggernautsearch.com still says Non-existant host/domain, but now it returns almost instantly. Wait, at least it did the 1st time; now it's taking a while. I'm using hugo.acns, BTW. I was using yuma yesterday. Hey, I just noticed a mistake in my resolv.conf (100.63 instead of 100.64). -- Adam Carheden carheden@holly.ColoState.EDU

Neither of these name servers respond to nslookup. Since both of their nameservers are down, they are pretty much kicked off the net. Bummer. : while. I'm using hugo.acns, BTW. The 103 subnet is a backplane between the big machines. Another useless fact. Woo. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Michael J.
