Partitioning Advice

I'm looking for some disk partitioning advice. Due to some hardware
failures and subsequent "merging" of machines I want to setup Linux
(Redhat 5.2) and Windows '98 on a dual-boot system. I've got a 6.4 GB
hard disk to do this on. What I would like is some advice on setting up
initial partitions and such. Things like what utility to setup the dual
(or is it duel ;) boot system, which OS do I have to install first (or
does it matter), etc. If you have any advice please fire away.

DEFINITELY install Windows first. I have tried it both ways. When I
started with Linux and added Windows, all hell broke lose. Win wanted to
reformat my entire HD before it would install. Even after I left it a
nice 3 Gb partition, Win wanted it all.

After you install Windose, Linux is happy to have whatever is left. I am
using 2Gb for the Win partition (FAT16), which linux will recognize the
way Windose sets it up. Then on the remaining I have 640Mb for swap and
the rest of my 8Gb for Linux.

For booting, you can use Lilo off of the hard disk, but windows gets
picky about that especially if you have more than a 6Gb HD. I use a
floppy to boot Linux, which is a little slower, but at least Windows
can't overwrite Lilo that way. When I want to boot windows, I boot
without the floppy and windose is happy.

Now if I can just get Wine to run all of my Windose programs, or else
GNU writes a bunch more, I will join the Light side completely. :)

If you have enough ram, you might install Linux, VMware, Linux again in
VMware, W98 in VMware. Then you can run both at the same time and talk to
one another.

But then you have to pay for VMware. See www.vmware.com

I would install Win first. Windows doesn't play well with others, but
Linux will play well with Windows. I would suggest something along
the lines of 2048MB in hda1 for Windows, 2048Mb in hda2 (Extended
partition crap), 2048 in hda5 (Actually in hda2, but due to that
extended wierdness... Or is that fixed, yet? And the remaining for
Linux and its swap (hda3 and hda4).

Lilo will handle the dual-booting.

Windows will only see its own partitions, but Linux will be able to
see them all. The hda5 partition will give you the option of turning
that partition into a full-linux partition when you come completly
over to the dark side. :)

Until then, you'll want it for bloated Windows apps, MP3s and ... uh...
pictures. Yeah.

But this is just my suggestion. :)

Am I reading this right in that Linux can read FAT16, but not FAT32?

Thanks for the help all. I'll try and give it a go this weekend.

Me bad. That should be FAT32. Personally I don't think windose knows
how to read anything, but at least Linux knows what to do with the FAT32
partition.

Linux can read FAT32. Linux can read FAT16. Linux can read NTFS and
HPFS. Is it just me, or is it really ironic that Linux can read more
Microsoft file systems than either Windows 9x or NT?

Linux can read Apple filesystems. Linux can read Amiga filesystems.
Linux can read myriad other UNIX filesystems.

I would almost issue that challenge that my Linux box can read any
format you can muster, give the hardware is available. If nothing
else, you could cat it through /usr/bin/strings and get something
useful out of it...

When one of our clients sent us a bunch of mysterious files, I turned
to my Linux box to figure out what they were. They were Pagemaker5
files for the Mac platform, sent over the internet, then stored on a
MS network share.

There wasn't much I could /do/ with the files, aside from pull out
the raw text, but at least I could have done that...

If u enable large disk support in Windose (ie FAT32), some flavours of LLinux will not be able to access it (even using vfat) ..
I had slackware (probably an old version) which could not acess fat32 partitions ...
WIth suse there's no problem ...
