holly and lamar mailservers down... on purpose!

Has everyone heard about the I Love You virus? Well, I just heard that
Holly and Lamar (and I think handle, the CS mail server) have all had
their SMTP servers shut down to stop the spread of this Outlook borne
pathogen. That pisses me off more than spam! If these idiot outlook
users can't deal with a little virus, why should the rest of us be
denied mail service? Before, I thought viruses just affected the
Windows community, but it looks like someone has found a way to make
them affect the rest of us as well.

I've been receiving email all morning on lamar. Are you sure things are
shut down?

It's YetAnother VBScript 'virus'. It seems to be a little nastier than
some of the others as it screws with a bunch of registry settings.

I wasn't worried about the email server. I've received and sent several
emails today without a problem. Where I do have a problem is the "403
Forbidden You don't have permission to access /~cs410 on this server"

I can get to the cs homepage, but none of the class pages. Telnet still
work to Armstrong and it's brothers, but it takes a looooooooonnnnnggggg
time. I think something is definitely going on. I hope they fix it real
soon.

You're in 410? Who are you?! :)

The ILOVEYOU was a melissa-like worm that would send itself to all
your friends if you ran it. Its was written in VBScript, so you
kind of had to run it to fire it off. Once you ran it, though,
it would rename all your MP3s, send itself to all your friends,
and so on and so on...

Oddly enough, my office wasn't effected in the slighest. Thank you,
Netscape.

I'm the person who can't go to classes because of work. Fortunately, I
can do all of my programming for both cs410 and cs475 at home, including
threads. :) (the MPI stuff I had to actually go to the CS labs to work
on)

If you get the virus, take it to the Business dept. They are giving away
a free pizza to anyone who gets the virus. The funny part of this is, I
have been in their lab for the last three nights working on...VB! Well,
Visual Basic, not VBscript. *g*

Wow! Rewarding stupidity. It looks like they found a way to screw over
natural selection. The business dept. never ceases to amaze me.

Okay, so I never actually experienced a lack of service, but someone
told me they were down.

Either way, I was laughing at all the losers who were affected* until I
got home and spent half an hour on the phone with my father trying to
fix various thing broken by the virus. (-=How many times have I told you
NOT to run things people send you via e-mail.=-) One way or another,
these virus writing so-and-so's are making things difficult for all of
us.

*ObPickOnDwyerAnyChanceIGet:
affect: verb
effect: noun
(actually, I looked it up on www.m-w.com, and affect is actually a verb,
a noun and a transitive verb, while effect is a noun and a transitive
verb. Go fig.)

Yeah, I guess it hit a number of cell phones and pagers as well!
Today in rec.humor.funny someone was trying to send something with
the subject ILOVEYOU to his friends. Their server rejected it
with

553 we dont love you

Heh heh...
