Building distributed applications by direct manipulation

Visual Obliq is a tool to make it (nearly) as easy to build a
distributed, multi-user application as it is to build a single-user,
non-distributed application using an environment such as Microsoft's
Visual Basic. The heart of Visual Obliq is an interface builder
for constructing GUIs by direct manipulation, with user-supplied
callback-code written in Obliq.
Our model of a distributed application is as follows. The program
starts up at a "server" site and spreads to "client" sites via
"Visual Obliq servers" running on those machines. Clients may
join the session on their own, or by invitation. The unit of
distribution is a "form", a top level window. A program may contain
many forms, and several instances of each form may exist at various
sites on the network. The programmer is provided transparent
access to all forms within a session, thereby making it easy
to write a distributed application.
This is joint work with Krishna Bharat, Georgia Tech.
