ECEN 5503, Computer System Design and Architecture, will be offered
in Summer 2003. It is being offered in term C (June 2-July 25),
1:30-3:10 MWF.

ECEN 5503 provides an introduction to the basic concepts of
computer system design and architecture. It is intended for
the graduate student who has had no prior exposure to the gate-level
structure of digital computers or to assembly language programming, and
students who complete the course successfully will have sufficient
background to take graduate-level computer architecture courses.

No prerequisite knowledge of computer architecture or digital logic is
assumed. The student is assumed to be familiar with at least one higher
level programming language, such as C or Pascal, however.
The course will cover digital logic design, including combinational
and sequential logic. Following this, assembly language and
machine language will be described, as an introduction to the
internal structure of the computer. The heart of the course will be the
coverage of computer design at the gate level. The course will also
cover computer arithmetic, the memory hierarchy, I/O, peripheral
devices such as disk drives and monitors. It will conclude with a discussion
of networking and the Internet, including serial data communications,
Ethernet and other LAN's, communications protocols, and internetworking.
