INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
(Volunteer position, unpaid)
Job Title - Computer programmer assistant
Although this is an unpaid position, this is a rare opportunity to
get experience working with SAP software. You will be learning
first hand how to use SAPs ABAP programming language, working as
part of a very visible, talented, and energized professional team
working on systems projects that will significantly influence USGS
information technology landscape for years to come.
Hours - A least 20 hours a week for 10 weeks, working with other
programmers at the USGS facility listed below. This opportunity
can be extended if doing so is in the best interest of the
government and the intern.
Apply Before - May 24, 2002
Location -
U. S. Geological Survey (USGS)
Branch of Information Services (BIS)
Rocky Mountain Mapping Center
Building 810
Denver Federal Center
Lakewood, Colorado
Job Duties -
USGS Branch of Information Services is looking for an enthusiastic
student interested in learning to use SAPs ABAP programming
language. This intern will work on tasks for the Integrated
Business Solutions (IBiS) project, which is implementing a
challenging suite of cutting-edge business-related applications in
inventory management and electronic commerce. The IBiS project
works to enhance the newly implemented IBiS system, which comprises
SAP R/3 software (version 4.6C) installed on Sun Enterprise 450
servers running the Solaris operating system. Although this is an
unpaid position, this is a rare opportunity to get professional
experience working with SAP software.
This is an entry level position. The incumbent will be provided
with specific instructions regarding the purpose of the assignment,
limitations, expected deadlines, and priorities. Coworkers and the
supervisor will give advice regarding any issues as they arise.
The incumbent will work within the instructions and guidance
provided. All unusual situations will be discussed with coworkers
and/or the supervisor. Work will be carefully reviewed at various
points during the process until completion. Assignments will be
selected to enhance the incumbents experience and development.
Major duties include the following:
Assisting USGS programmers in writing and testing ABAP programs
that work with the SAP R/3 system known as IBiS (Integrated
Business Solutions). (ABAP is SAPs proprietary programming
language.)
Participating in programming design discussions with USGS
programmers and users who describe their requirements.
Assisting in maintaining status information on the progress of the
ABAP Team in the MS Project document.
Assisting in converting old USGS program code to new platforms to
maximize reuse of old programs.
Participating in research related to finding suitable software (or
upgrading or writing USGS programs) for wireless bar code
applications for business processes in BIS.
Attending regular meetings of the IBiS Team and participating in
discussions related to programming plans, issues, activities,
priorities, and schedules.
Developing an understanding of the needs of users in the Branch of
Information Services and the goals of the organization, and
proposing workable solutions to important needs.
Knowledge Required -
Working knowledge of two or more major programming languages, for
example, C, C++, Java, Perl. Familiarity with ABAP not necessary,
but must be willing to learn ABAP. Experience programming in a
UNIX environment desirable.
Experience gathering user requirements and proposing and designing
program solutions.
Familiarity with structured programming techniques and software
libraries, and the ability to write and debug parts of larger
programs in coordination with other programmers.
Familiarity with software testing concepts and techniques,
including test environments, test data, test documentation, and
concepts related to unit testing and integration testing.
Familiarity with relational database management system (RDBMS)
concepts and RDBMS systems such as Oracle and Access.
Facility with common PC office-type software.
Experience working with many different data types (ie. text,
numeric, image) and file types (ie. .txt, .dbf, .html, .xml,
.zip).
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. This includes the
ability to present orally and in writing a summary of user needs,
proposed system solutions, and the program design being proposed
(with or without illustrations or presentation slides, as the case
may warrant). This also includes the ability to create diagrams to
illustrate concepts and the ability to understand diagrams of many
kinds commonly used in design discussions (for example, histograms,
bar charts, schematic system diagrams, organizational charts,
etc.).
USGS Contact Name -
Creighton Wood, Senior Software Engineer, cewood@usgs.gov, 303-202-4276
Background -
Integrated Business Solutions (IBiS) projects currently include the
following: (1) setting up a web-accessible "Portal" to the IBiS
system; (2) setting up a web-accessible "Internet Store," including
a USGS product catalog integrated with a search engine and an
ordering capability; (3) reengineering and automating BIS "Shipment
Receiving" processes when new products are being shipped to BIS;
(4) reengineering and automating BIS "Sendings" processes when new
products arrive at BIS; (5) adding the many make-to-order "Open-
File Reports" to the IBiS system; and (6) responding to requests
from IBiS users for new custom reports and tweaking existing
functionality.
The Branch of Information Services supports the delivery of
products and information for the U.S. Geological Survey to both
domestic and international customers. The printed products of the
USGS as well as selected products from several Federal partners are
handled by the branch.
BIS accomplishes mission objectives by taking advantage of
strategic partnerships with both the private sector and other
Federal agencies. A national and international network of product
retailers has been assembled to reach a marketplace that could not
be accomplished easily by government alone. Modernization of the
business infrastructure has been a cornerstone of recent
improvements in operations and customer service.
The USGS was established by Congress through the Organic Act on
March 3, 1879, and was authorized to publish, sell, and distribute
the results of scientific research and investigations (43 U.S.C.
41-45; 44 U.S.C. 1318, 1320). In addition to this, the Director of
the USGS was authorized and directed by Congress to "dispose of"
the topographic and geologic maps and atlases of the United States
made and published by the USGS at such prices and under such
regulations as may from time to time be fixed by him and approved
by the Secretary of the Interior.
