Thanks to all of those who responded to my message in such a timely
manner. The utility of a mailing list like this was certainly
demonstrated.

I had several solutions offered:

1. Type several CTRL-C's during the load of vmunix bringing it back
to the console prompt. This would probably work as long as long as
the ROM's service interrupts. I didn't try this solution.

2. Type several CTRL-C's during the file system check (fsck) pass.
Again this would probably work but I didn't do this either.

3. Open up the case and short the jumper that clears the ROM, or at
least it sets the ROM to factory defaults. I looked upon this as a
last resort approach.

4. The approach I took was to turn on the machine with the disc
drives powered off. This was the easiest for me since I had powered
everything off while I thought about a solution. The autoboot
sequence immediately failed and I got a console prompt. I was
expecting to have to wait for a lengthy timeout but it was very quick
to figure out that the boot device wasn't there. Once I was at the
console prompt I removed the -a switch from vmunix and entered single
user mode to fix my /etc/rc.local.

Again, thanks to all of you who offered these solutions.
