I'm having a problem with dump on one of the partitions on my DEC 5000/240 (Ultrix 4.3). Our nightly dump intermittantly gets errors of the form "iofail 12 43017;Disk write error on disk 1" on one particular parition. It's apparently *not* the disk, though, but rather the tape device that's erroring - uerf reports only: ----- EVENT INFORMATION ----- EVENT CLASS ERROR EVENT OS EVENT TYPE 103. TAPE ERROR SEQUENCE NUMBER 63. OPERATING SYSTEM ULTRIX 32 OCCURRED/LOGGED ON Tue Aug 8 10:07:32 1995 EDT OCCURRED ON SYSTEM baker.dartmo SYSTEM ID x82040230 HW REV: x30 FW REV: x2 CPU TYPE: R2000A/R3000 PROCESSOR TYPE KN03 ----- UNIT INFORMATION ----- UNIT CLASS SCSI TAPE UNIT TYPE TZXX CONTROLLER NO. 0. UNIT NO. 4. I've had the drive replaced recently. Changing tapes doesn't help (and the drive is cleaned regularly). It's occurred to me that there might be some file that gets touched (and therefore backed up) every once and awhile, but I can't figure out why mere bits in a file would do this. What do the iofail numbers represent? It's always "iofail XX 43017" - XX is either 12 or 14. Any ideas? Thanks. Pat Wilson paw@dartmouth.edu
