I am at wits end about why our syslog daemon has suddenly stopped logging messages on our DecStation 5000/240, running Ultrix 4.2A (Rev 47). Yesterday we rebooted it, after quite a long time of being up, and now the /etc/syslog daemon no longer writes anything to the syslog file. The syslog.conf has not changed, nor has the sendmail or named software (although both of their config files HAVE changed). Now syslog only reports its own startup and termination events. Oddly, we HAVE gotten it to log some events from a linux system over the network, while it still refuses to log events on its own host! Arrgghh! One of our sysadmins tried installing a newer syslog program, obtained from "gatekeeper.dec.com", I believe. That did not help. Has anyone been through this before? Am I missing something obvious? By the way, our reason for the reboot was to change our default domain name on that host, from "HSC.Colorado.edu" to "UCHSC.edu". Could that be relevant in any way?
