PROBLEM ULTRIX 4.4 The problem was that quite suddenly I was no longer able to su to a privileged account ie 'su root' 'su field' 'su oper' etc. although I could quite happily su to a normal account. RESOLUTION Unfortunately I did not find the cause of this problem but resolved it via a reboot however I did receive two possible solutions to this problem which may help others. in /etc/ttys replacing /dev/tty01 with /etc/ttyd1 can cause this problem. it was also pointed out that in DEC Unix 4 a user must be a member of root group to su to root.
