Is it the >>institution which owns the machines (in my case the university) or the >>author of the content? >> Given the nature of the Web as an international community based more on sharing of knowledge and resource I think the nature of copyright should be directed more toward included text rather than web pages themselves. If someone or someones and many many companies, unversities, etc share their resource along the way you could not be reading this post. If someone or someones and many many developers had not made the HTML format available and had not made available example text you would not be producing home pages. The web and the internet should be place of sharing. If you don't want your web page used as a template by others for expansion and develpment perhaps you shouldn't publish it on the net. Besides, I haven't seen any web pages that are all that fantastic. Now the material included in some of these pages is quite extrordinary. Obviously if someone includes a poem, story, book, etc. that must be protected. If someone mirrors a copy of my poem on the internet have they infringed upon my copyright? If they provide a pointer to my poem have they infringed? The only clear case is when someone pulls material from the net and places it in print, diskette or other off net distribution. That doesn't seem very nice. For myself, I would like to provide electronic copies of my science fiction. I know that some of these thoughts are simplistic and don't really take into consideration the rapid development of commerce on the net and the growing needs of those that want to cash in on the net. That's okay. I don't mind being simplistic. I like the simple act of sharing that the net started as. Too many developers have given too many hours for me to feel like some fancy looking web page should have a copyright. brdotwn@oro.net without giving permission for someone to sell the book to Dell.
