Washington DC, - International Opportunities Center (IOC), based
in Washington DC reports that since 1983 around 1,000,000
persons have immigrated to Australia under various sponsored and
unsponsored programs including Family Migration, Skills Migration, as
well as Humanitarian and Refugee programs. In addition to this
permanent migration, approximately 75,000 temporary residency
permits, 35,000 student visas, and 2,800,000 tourists visas are also
expected to be issued for entry to Australia this year alone.

Australia has come a long way since the day when Capt. James Cook
discovered and claimed it for Great Britain in 1770. This land, the
size of continental USA, is now home to 17.8 million Australians.
Today, Australians live longer, healthier, and a more relaxed life
than most of their counterparts in western countries including USA,
Germany, and UK. While an average worker in Sydney puts in a 32
hours work week and gets 22 days vacation, an average New Yorker
continues to slave for 37.3 hours per week and enjoys only 12 days of
holidays!

Australia is currently making a recovery from its recent recession.
The overall unemployment is down from the last year's high of 11.1%
to its current level of 10%. For certain occupations including
managers, administrators, professionals, and para-professionals it
is below 3.5%. In fact, according to one of the major studies
conducted by the Australian government, employment for Pharmacists,
Therapists, Veterinarians, Social Workers, Accountants, Computer
Professionals, Economists, Psychologists, and Mathematicians is
expected to grow at an exceptional rate of above 50% between the
years 1991 to 2001. Several other occupations including Natural
Scientists, Architects, Engineers, Lawyers, Business Professionals,
Child Care Coordinators, Refrigeration Mechanics, Bricklayers,
Plumbers, and Hairdressers are also expected to show a very healthy
growth. All this growth may allow increased quotas for immigration
and temporary work permits.

Of the 485,000 students pursuing higher education in over 40
Australian institutions in 1990, roughly 6% hailed from foreign
countries. The foreign enrollment has risen significantly in recent
years from around 16,000 in 1985, to its current level of around
35,000. This reflects a strong effort being made by Australia to
project itself as an international center for higher education &
research and to strongly compete along with USA for international
students. Education in Australia is generally cheaper, with visa
approval rates normally higher when compared to the USA. The
Australian government has also instituted several scholarships
schemes for international students like ADCO, ASTAS, and CSFP.
