The next meeting of the Front Range UNIX Users Group will be in room 123 of the CU Academic Computing Center building at Arapahoe and Marine Streets in Boulder at 4:00 PM on Wednesday April 19, 1995. Marine St intersects Arapahoe at 38th St; the Computing Center is on the southwest corner. The speaker for our next meeting is Tom Christiansen and the topic is Perl 5.0. Perl is an interpreted language optimized for scanning arbitrary text files, extracting information from those text files, and printing reports based on that information. It's also a good language for many system management tasks. The language is intended to be practical (easy to use, efficient, complete) rather than beautiful (tiny, elegant, minimal). Perl5 is, essentially, a complete rewrite of the perl source code from the ground up. It has been modularized, object oriented, tweaked, trimmed, and optimized until it almost doesn't look like the old code. Some of the features of Perl5 over the previous version are: Enhanced Usability, Simplified Grammar, Lexical Scoping, Arbitrarily nested data structures, Modularity and Reusability, Object-oriented programming, and POSIX compliance. Tom Christiansen is an international software consultant specializing in Perl applications, programming, optimizations and training. He earned an MS degree in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He serves on the USENIX Board of Directors.
