Posting for a friend. ============================================================================== Date: Fri, 21 Mar 97 12:07:05 -0800 From: edytra@es.com.sv (edytra) Subject: Healthcare development volunteer opportunity Saludos de El Salvador! Greetings from El Salvador! We, the GEOMED class of 1996-97, are sending this e-mail to you to announce that GEOMED is now accepting applications for the next team of volunteers for 1997-98! If selected as a GEOMEDic, you will work for 8-11 months in El Salvador to help develop a basic health care system. We invite you to join this wonderful experience. GEOMED, a non-profit organization founded in 1993 and based in North Conway, New Hampshire, trained and sent a team of 19 inspired volunteers to several impoverished areas of El Salvador last fall. From different parts of the U.S. and Canada, representing several colleges such as Stanford, Harvard, and Colorado, we are that team of volunteers. Currently, we serve three rural communities in northern El Salvador and a community named Iberia (where people can be found hunting for food at the local garbage dump) in the city of San Salvador. Like the Peace Corps, we focus our development work at the grassroots level with people in our communities. Our activities vary according to their needs and have included the following projects (as described in the words of actual teams): Las Minas - "When we arrived in our community we discovered an abandoned clinic left over from the post-war years. After cleaning, stocking and organizing the clinic, we have started training local health promoters in basic medicine so that they will be able to service their own community by staffing the clinic after we leave." San Jose - "In our community we often get isolated from the city of Chalatenango during the rainy season due to road flooding, so we have devoted a lot of time to a bridge project. We are currently seeking funding and technical expertise for this project and are hoping to start the construction of a local medical clinic." Reubicaciones - "Much of our time here has been devoted to public health education in the schools, the local clinic and the community at large. We are currently working with a group of dedicated first aid students in the hopes of training them to be a volunteer rescue squad for medical emergencies." San Salvador - "We have had a good degree of success teaching health classes in the local high school, and hope to inspire these young people to pursue some public health projects in their community. We have also enjoyed holding youth group discussions with at-risk teens, in an effort to keep them out of the ever-present gang culture." During our time here, the GEOMED experience has presented us with many emotional, physical and intellectual challenges. We feel few opportunities will offer you the same benefits as these: *Personal growth *Cross-Cultural Experience *Resume-enhancing skills as you plan, organize and implement projects in your community *Fluency in the Spanish language, especially the El Salvadoran dialect *Travel Opportunities in neighboring countries Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize and Costa Rica *Clinical Experience in the following U.S. healthcare settings: Walk-in Care Clinic, Emergency Room, Wilderness and Mountain Rescues *Observation time in a Salvadoran clinic, hospital, and/or ambulance squad *Wilderness EMT certification *American Red Cross CPR-C certification *And an invitation to join the GEOMED Alumni Network, where you can share experiences with past GEOMED volunteers. ....If what we've described here intrigues you ....If you're searching for an opportunity to challenge yourself ....If you want to discover what you can accomplish in a demanding, rewarding setting for the coming year CONTACT GEOMED NOW!! You can request more information and an application by sending e-mail to <GEOMED@moose.ncia.net>. Hurry now. We want you to join our '97-'98 GEOMED team!
