Here is an announcement for an upcoming graduate student conference.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW FRONTIERS IN RESEARCH: COMMUNICATION, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

 	First Annual Southern California Interdisciplinary
		Graduate Student Conference:
University of Southern California, April 3-4, 1998

The Southern California Interdisplinary Graduate Student Conference will
be held Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4, 1998, at the Annenberg
School for Communication at the University of Southern California in Los
Angeles. Graduate students from all universities in California and across
the country are invited to participate in the conference.

The keynote speaker is Erwin Chemerinsky, the Sydney M. Irmas Professor of
Public Interest Law and Legal Ethics of the USC School of Law. Professor
Chemerinsky, a notable civil rights professor, is an expert on the
constitutionality of communications policy. He was recently elected to the
Los Angeles Charter Commission, the prestigious body of scholars and
professionals empowered to reform the charter of the city of Los Angeles.
Professor Chemerinsky became nationally recognized on network television
as an expert commentator of the OJ Simpson trial.

We anticipate submissions across the full spectrum of academia. Some
prospective areas of interest may include the impact of technology upon
society (and vice versa). We are also open to other suggestions for
panels, such as research concerning the latest innovations in
communication technology.

The aim of the conference is to provide an opportunity for graduate
students to practice presenting their work in a collegial setting. We want
to provide a unique opportunity for graduate students to communicate and
exchange ideas with other graduate students in different disciplines. The
general plan will be to allow ample time for discussion of the
presentations. Prestigious faculty members from throughout the state have
also agreed to participate.

There are three successive deadlines to be met:

   1.February 9, 1998: a 150 word abstract of the paper
2.March 9, 1998 (postmark): completed papers; papers are not to exceed
25 pages of main text (double-spaced; two copies).

All correspondence and abstracts should be sent to gradconf@usc.edu.
The conference web site address is http://www-scf.usc.edu/~gradconf/
All proposals must have full names, addresses, telephone numbers, and
e-mail addresses for all author(s) of the papers.
Responses to submissions will be sent by e-mail unless a different
means of response is requested in the submission.
