1. Funding
The next funding request is due the first Monday in March. The funding
guidelines state that if a group does not submit a report for money spent
from UGGS, then that group is not eligible for future funding. Check with
Caryn to see if your group has submitted reports. (bergcm@ucsub)
We need to have documentation of where our money is going.

2. Preparing Future Faculty
The Graduate Teacher Program at CU has received funding to develop a
Preparing Future Faculty Program on campus. The goal is to help CU "All
But Dissertation" students teach at other institutions, such as the
Colorado School of Mines, etc. President Buechner will be speaking. If
you know of anyone who would like to develop their teaching skills, tell
them to contact either Michelle Woodward (woodwarm@ucsu) or Hoag Holmgren,
Assistant Director of the Graduate Teacher Program. 492-4902.
Right now the program is being test piloted with certain departments.
This is a nationally recognized program.

3. Lobby Day
Every year, NAGPS hosts a Lobby Day in Washington, DC. Officers meet with
government officials (staff members) to argue for reductions in student
debt via changes in loan programs, tax codes, etc. They have set up a
gateway (e-mail to fax) which can be accessed via the NAGPS web page.
NAGPS encourages all member schools to participate by giving their input
to representatives.
This initiative is mostly directed at the federal government. Deals with
loans, grants, etc.

4. OneAmerica Initiative
UGGS has been thinking about what they can do regarding President
Clinton's OneAmerica Initiative. Three schools will be participating, and
we will most likely try to put together a panel discussion here at CU.
Stay tuned (Jen Overbeck is the NAGPS Western Regional Human Diversity
Coordinator.)

5. UCSU/USSA conference
UGGS is still looking for a UCSU representative.
UGGS encourages everyone to get their IdentiKey Password (you need it in
order to vote on the next election over the web). The IdentiKey insures
that you are eligible to vote and that you only vote once. The new rules
state that there can be no campaigning indoors on the day of the election.
The USSA conference (United States Students Association) is being held in
D.C. on March 10, 1998. They are encouraging schools to send at least one
graduate student to this conference. If anyone would like to go to
Washington, DC to participate in lobbying, please let UGGS know. Airfare
and lodging will be paid. In most cases, students meet with a staff
member, who will then tell the Congress person what was discussed and
which issues are of a concern to students, and hopefully this affects the
vote.

Reports

1. Graduate School
Jeanne Manning and Jerry Peterson from the Graduate Student Advisory
Council wanted to have student input on the "Exploring Career
Opportunities" (formerly "Windows on the World") event.
Some of the GSAC members wanted to present some workshops on how graduate
students can get jobs outside of academia. The first of the "Windows on
the World" events was a half day, and it was a success. The second one,
however, (which was last spring) was a disaster.
How can the GSAC change the program so that people will attend?

There are four smaller rooms tentatively reserved for Tuesday March 31, as
well as the Glen Miller Lounge. Approximately 8 companies will be
represented. The point is to explore what you might end up doing with
your degree far prior to graduation.
What do grads want?
Some people from the first conference wanted job interviews and
connections with the companies, and when they found out that that was not
what the goal of the program was, then they left.
Maybe it should be held only in the spring-this could lead to summer
internships. It might also help to advertise the fact that internships are
available. This would encourage more people to come.
Feedback from corporations:
They felt unsure as to whether or not the students knew what sort of
questions to ask, and whether or not the students knew of any jobs outside
of academia.
	General discussion:
The format is mostly one company giving a presentation. Maybe it would be
better to have more panel discussions, so that industries in general are
discussed, as opposed to specific companies and what they are looking for.
This should be advertised as a good way to make contacts.
The advertising should be improved, and should be done in advance. The
last event was not advertised well-enough in advance.
Possibly have an advertisement in the Daily explaining the nature of the
event well in advance.
Is there a way to inform people of the types of companies that are going
to be present? The point is to let people know that these companies hire
outside of what you might think that they would. No one should consider
themselves excluded.
Is this not the best format for this type of thing? Would it be better if
some of the corporate people went to a specific department to talk?
Send them (Jean Manning and Jerry Peterson) an e-mail at:
peterson@specter.colorado
jeannem@compuserve.com

Given that they make some changes as regards advertising, types of
companies, networking possibilities, etc. most of the assembly felt that
it was a worthwhile event.

2. UCSU
--UCSU has authored a resolution that opposes hazing.

3. Athletic Fee Committee
--The athletic fee has finally been categorized as a particular type of
fee. Decisions are still being made regarding whether or not it should
remain in existence, and if so, in what format?

Meeting adjourned at 7:05pm
