NAGPS ACTION ALERT!!! October 8, 1998
Appropriations Battle Looms

Congress is currently in the final stages on determining spending levels
for all major education programs for Fiscal Year 1999. Three critical
graduate grant programs are under consideration for funding: the Javits
Fellowship Program, GAANN, and the Thurgood Marshall Legal Educational
Opportunity Program. To ensure that all three receive funding next year,
your calls are needed to the key members of the House and Senate
Appropriations Committee.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Call Congress and let them know that you support the following fellowships
in the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Bill,
or any "omnibus" bill that funds the operation of the federal government:

JAVITS FELLOWSHIPS: Javits fellowships are the only federal grant program
remaining for students in the arts, social sciences and humanities. Ask
that this program be funded at this $30 million for Fiscal Year 1999.

GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need): GAANN fellowships
fund students pursuing graduate work in science and engineering. Ask that
this program be funded at $30 million for Fiscal Year 1999.

THURGOOD MARSHALL LEGAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM: The Thurgood
Marshall program, added to the Higher Education Act this year, will
encourage talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to
attend law school. Ask that the Thurgood Marshall Program be
funded at $5 million for fiscal year 1999.

CALL THE SAVE STUDENT AID HOTLINE AT 1-800-574-4AID (TOLL FREE) and ask
for one of the following Congressional offices:

  Senators: Representatives:
Ted Stevens (R-AK) Bob Livingston (R-LA)
Arlen Specter (R-PA) David Obey (D-WI)
Robert Byrd (D-WV) John Porter (R-IL)
Slade Gorton (R-WA)

Tell them to provide the maximum amount of funding possible for these
important graduate grant programs! Call all of the members on this list!

HELP SAVE STUDENT AID AND GRADUATE GRANTS .... CALL TODAY!
(even make calls on Saturday ... they'll be there!)
