Subject: Disabilities Forum: November 22

Dear Department Chairs, Directors, and Staff Assistants,

The Arts and Sciences Diversity Committee is sponsoring a Disabilities Forum
next Monday afternoon.  Cathy Comstock, member of the Committee, has
eloquently expanded upon information that has been provided to you.  Here's
what Cathy has to say:

"Many departments have found themselves in a quandary when trying to fulfill
the special needs of students, staff and faculty with disabilities: what are
the staff resources, where is the funding, what is the right protocol?  The
problem is intensified when our lack of knowledge leads to students being
sent from place to place trying to find help and feeling like charity cases.

"The A&S Diversity Committee wants us to have a chance both to hear about
resources and appropriate process and to let Student Services know about the
particular problems that we encounter in this regard.  Ron Stump, Interim
Vice Chancellor, is very concerned about the subject and will be speaking at
the Forum, along with the head of Disability Services and two students who
represent the kinds of challenges faced by many.

"Please come or urge someone from your department to attend--colleagues,
students, staff, all are welcome.  We all have much to gain from more
communication on the subject.  An announcement of time and place follows
below."
