Actually, I don't think we agree at all! I think the anti-discrimination
laws are great, and that spending a few $$$ in the courts to test the laws
is money well spent. And I think they work toward their desired goal of
decreasing discrimination without adding any affirmative action status.
I think blanket actions (such as amendment 2) to repress the ability of
minorities (of any kind) to work toward legal protection are reprehensible, and
do immeasurable damage to the targetted community. The harm (really hurts,
believe me!) done to gay and lesbian folks in Colorado by A2 should be enough
for anyone to take pause.
**But**, I'll agree to disagree at this point since we seem to be at a
standstill. I am glad that we do agree on the point that discrimination is bad.
**Wait**! Come to think about it, it may be possible to hold the views you
hold and still be against A2-like legislation that specifically targets any one
group. That would certainly be more palatable to me on some levels (even
though I wouldn't agree at all with the philosophy). The whole idea
that people want to draw the line with us gays reeks of homophobia at face
value...why us? Why not let us work within the system? Meanwhile, see if you
can get support to do away with all claims of discrimination from *anyone*.
That would certainly seem more fair to me. (Although good luck trying to reverse
the civil rights act!)
Take care,
d.
