> >Being white is not a barrier to claims of discrimination on the basis >of race. It just doesn't happen very often that someone who would be >in a position to discriminate is anti-white. > >And in jurisdictions which provide protection on the basis of sexual >orientation, heterosexuals are also protected. There's even been the >odd case on those grounds, involving straight employees at gay bars. >But once again, it isn't that common for anti-straight discrimination >to occur. > I seem to recall a guy who brought a complaint against a gay bar because they refused to hire him as a waiter. The reasoning was actually quite comical - but in any event, the owner turned out to be a straight, white, female. Needless to say the complaint didn't fly - the reason they rejected him was he was too limp wristed and couldn't carry a tray full and would have to carry drinks two and three at a time. The simple ruling was - no discrimination existed, it was merely that he couldn't perform the duties as laid out in the job description. The bar, by the way, had two straight male waiters, among their staff, one of whom's wife was one of the bartenders. One of the straight waiters was a white male, the other was Latin American. They were both interviewed when this story hit the media, and when asked why straight males would want to be waiters in a gay establishment, the answer was the same for both, and quite predicatble......gays are nice people to wait on...and they're great tippers. The white fellow even went on to say that the patrons gave him great incentive to continue with his work out routines and visits to the gym to keep himself in shape. Now, while this story is certainly not the norm, it's a shred of hope that we can all get along, though there is limited proof of that theory. RT
