I would hope to be surprised. So, if a few people here got fed up with you and anonymously started a campaign to slander you as a pedophile (which, for all I know, you could be), then you should never be able to teach, even if acquitted of any wrongdoing? If you were to get on a gay mailing list or belong to a gay organization somehow, should your employer be able to fire you? Let us hope not, in either case. It would be grossly unfair. The first is most likely quite illegal, unless your work began to slip from the stress of defending yourself from accusers. The second is legal, although you could try to sue for "wrongful dismissal." I believe that Federal security clearances have changed since my experience with them ten years ago, but I recall that the formal question was "do you have any unusual sexual habits." (For the record, the correct answer is not "define unusual", although my friend managed to get the clearance in spite of attempt at humor. :*) I'm still searching the web for the complete text of ENDA, but from the excerpts I've seen, it appears that Mr. Ensign is correct. It simply forbids using sexual orientation in hiring and firing decisions. Many corporations already have this policy, stating that an individual's ability to do the job is the appropriate criteria for such decisions.
