Computer Scientists / Software Engineers

needed to develop design environments for manufacturing processes.
Ph.D., M. Sc. or B. Sc. with specialization in computational
geometry, graphical user interfaces, software systems or parallel
processing desirable. We are developing a virtual world for
simulating the physics of pouring liquid metal into molds of complex
geometric shapes. We simulate this casting process using
communicating agents that have specialized domain knowledge based on
the underlying physics.

We use a rich software environment that emphasizes Smalltalk, C, and
C++. We use modern software engineering tools such as ENVY (Smalltalk
version control system), ObjectCenter (C/C++ development environment)
and ClearCase (version control/configuration management tool). We are
working with a number of high level tools such as ThingLab II
(constraint system), ACIS (solid modelling kernel), Mathematica, and
Explorer (visualization framework). As well, we expect to start using
VisualWorks, a Smalltalk-based GUI builder from ParcPlace. Our primary
workstations are Sun SPARCS, but we also have SGI, NeXT and Macintosh
machines. If you are an expert on HP/Apollo or IBM it would not hurt.
For parallel processing we have access to an Intel i860 Hypercube. You
should have enough experience with C and UNIX to work comfortably in
that environment and enough breadth of experience not to be too proud
of it. We place a strong emphasis on good Computer Science theory and
software design. You will work with a team of mechanical engineers,
mathematicians, materials scientists and computer scientists on a
problem of great interest to industry.

This is a world class research project funded by MRCO, an Ontario
Centre of Excellence, and the NSERC Chair on High Pressure Die
Casting. Salaries are competitive.
