I just moved from a Mac IIfx to a *nice* Quadra 950 (the Mac came for free). But I had to upgrade my MacIvory card for Quadra compatibility. Thanks to Symbolics this was still possible and I now have a perfectly working MacIvory 3 in a Quadra. > >Personally I would be certainly interested in a Symbolics emulator (Open >Genera) >running either on Apple PowerBooks on SPARC. Nowadays having a relatively slow emulator but all the software in RAM would be a big boost for a lot of software. Still I'd expect an Ivory emulator under a, say, 400Mhz UltraSPARC on Solaris 7 (it's already 64 Bit) to run at three to ten times faster than an Ivory (depending how good the emulator is). >!). By the way Alpha does not seem to be very common in my world either. >If somebody is able to resurrect the idea of Open Genera for Sparcs and/or >PowerBooks, there is a very good chance that people in universities or >research centers will be interested, provided the prices stay >reasonable...it was unfortunately never the case, though. Actually I think the price for Open Genera (around $5000) is reasonable. You get a lot of source and you can run multiple Generas on one Machine. LispWorks and ACL are much more expensive - IIRC. It's just that I don't have use for Alphas - we are using SPARCs - most customers are using SPARCs - our Internet Carrier uses SPARCs. Sigh. > Moreover I am sure that many oldtimers like me, those who look at their >old quadra or FX with angst every time they turn it on, would start to >relax! The Mac is really no problem. Just look in a Mac magazine and get a used 68k Mac cheap. Alternatively a lot of companies are giving their old Macs away for a few bucks. I have more worries about my MacIvory cards. I'm prepared to do a lot to keep them running. Sigh. Rainer Joswig Rainer Joswig, "Lavielle" EDV Systemberatung GmbH & Co.
