I used the old IP addresses per mikemac's advice and disabled route(8)
commands and ran Start X Screen and lo and behold, a centered
1440x1080 Genera window pops up on this 1600x1200 screen. It's cool to
see Zmacs and all the other Activities run at a different resolution.
The final thing to do, to play it safe, is to get Start X Screen to
run when the machine boots. Do any of you know of a way to run Lisp
code when the machine boots so that powering the console and
keyboarding in a Login to run your lispm-init isn't necessary? I can
have net:enable-remote-login always T and some code that prevents
going into the cold load stream during an x-error loaded by doing an
Incremental World, but I can't figure out a way to automatically
evaluate a form or try to start the X screen without first logging in.
Intuitively, I think there _has_ to be a way to do this... every other
OS out there gives you /etc/init.d/ or autoexec.bat or whatever.
Yes, you can just an initialization of your own on the warm initialization
list and save the world. This initialization could read its commands from
a file, if it wanted to (although I'd want to be sure that that file was
secure from modification by untrusted people). Several sites do this for
autostarting their servers.
If there isn't a way to do this, it's not the end of the world I
guess, since the keyboard has been behaving itself lately, but it
would at the very least save the aging monitor extra wear by allowing
me to flip the switch on the XL when things crash or drop to the FEP
and have the window pop back up a minute later.
