I've played with things more and now I think I understand more about how the X-Server is supposed to work, though I haven't gotten any farther than I was this morning. I'm hoping maybe if someone has a working Genera 8.3 X Server installation that they could confirm that this is how things work. As far as I can guess, the Start X Server command without arguments is supposed to start the background daemon, nothing more. If you wish to use X applications on the Genera console, you then go to the X Server activity via Select-Square, then use the Switch Mode command. If things are working up to this point then the screen will quickly blank and then switch to an X-style screen. You can exit this X-style screen via the Network key. If you specify yes to the :Hostile key, you will immediately go to the X-style screen no matter where you invoked the command from. If I specify yes to the :Hostile key, my screen blanks and I'm thrown into the debugger with the same bzero message I posted earlier. The herald says "X Server 424.0". Perhaps patching is needed. To recap; the error is that function X-SERVER:|bzero| is undefined. I decided to see if I could locate the definition and compile/load it manually. I searched all files in CDROM0:>SYS>X11>**>*.*;NEWEST for the string "bzero" and got a number of calls to it in C code but no function definition. The last match returned was: CDROM0:>SYS>X11>SERVER>INCLUDE>MISC.H;500 Line #62 #include <X11/Xfuncs.h> /* for bcopy, bzero, and bcmp */ I then searched for that file in the entire CDROM and there was no match. I then searched through every *.h and *.c file on the CDROM for bzero and there was no definition, though many, many calls. I'm not sure how to proceed. I tried Compile System X Server but there were compile errors that begat compile errors and it looks like I'll have to learn a good bit more about the environment and tools before I can do compiles of large software systems. If it turns out that some source needed to do a full compile was accidentally or otherwise omitted from the CD; I suppose I could grab an archived copy of X11R4 from the MIT ftp and see what I could do.... But before I do all this and lose my hair, have any of you out there ever successfully used the X Server included with the Genera 8.3 distribution? Drop me a mail or something if so. Just say, "yeah, I've installed that. It works." It will give me a nice psychological... bleah. Good night. Christopher
