I'm looking for a low-end Symbolics machine; Ideally a MacIvory I, though I'll buy any model that runs (even a 3600). I had located an affordable 3620 from a gentleman in the UK but the shipping turned out to be prohibitive. Ideally, I'd like to purchase one within a reasonable driving distance of the SF Bay Area. One thing I'm hoping might be a possibility is if anyone has a Symbolics that they are not using but do not yet feel ready to part with would consider renting it. My budget could very easily accomodate any rental/payments type of arrangement, though I could afford to buy flat-out a lower end machine. I keep finding myself talking about the functionality of GNU/X Emacs with Kent Pitman and others and they keep telling me how it pales in comparison to that of Genera and describing specific features like object pointers, Dynamic Windows, the degree of "precision" in Zmacs commands that distinguish them from Emacs commands, the various source-control facilities, the quality and presentation style of the documentation, how commands can work contextually, etc, etc. They keep telling me, "go buy one", so here I am. I really like the idea of the rental scenario, because I perhaps won't need it that long, but I'd like to get to know the functionality fairly thoroughly and see if any of the more useful functionality can be implemented at least in part in the standard Emacs we all have available to us. I should have some time after finals at the end of this month (grrr...), and this would give me a nice thing to do over the summer in between summer classes or a summer job (decisions, decisions...). I would like to extend my thanks in advance to anyone able to accomodate me with a situation where I would be able to spend a little time with one. Thank you for reading, Christopher
