Subject: News about Macsyma Inc.

I want to inform you of some recent changes at Macsyma Inc. affecting
our current product and development areas. We are simplifying our
product line and as well as adding new products,
redesigning our web pages, starting an e-commerce area and will soon
offer on-line moderated discussion groups for registered users of
Macsyma and PDEase and our developers.

Here is the overview:

1. After Macsyma Inc. was sold earlier this summer, it rejoined
Symbolics Inc. as its math component. As you may recall, when it
originally became a commercial product in the 1980's, Macsyma was a
division of Symbolics, then the leading supplier of artificial
intelligence and knowledge based hardware and software including an
outstanding operating system called Genera running on specialized
Lisp Machine hardware. Many innovative software and hardware
products were developed and enhanced there including Macsyma running
on Genera. In 1992, Macsyma Inc. became an independent company.
Recently, Symbolics ported its Open Genera OS to the Compaq Alpha
64-bit workstation where Macsyma currently runs under Virtual Open
Genera 2.0, again as a leading application. Macsyma 2.4 for Windows and 422
keep
on showing strengths as powerful but easy to use math software.
Indeed, recent comprehensive tests conducted by Dr. Michael Wester
continue to show Macsyma's leading performances in many areas of
applied math. You can see the results for yourself at
http://math.unm.edu/~wester/cas_review.html.

2. You can read a press release about Macsyma at
http://www.macsyma.com.

3. Building on Macsyma's historical ability to produce powerful and
ultra reliable math results, we will select several new math and
application areas for development.

4. In addition to selling Macsyma 2.4 for PC and 422 for UNIX/LINUX
Macsyma Inc will sell Macsyma for Open Genera on Compaq Alpha 64-bit
workstations as well as other Symbolics Inc. hardware and software.
You can also visit http://www.symbolics.com.

5. Macsyma has a new web page and an e-commerce outlet. Please visit
http://www.macsyma.com (or http://shop.macsyma.com.)

6. We are now offering new, powerful demo versions of Macsyma and
PDEase finite element software. Visit http://www.macsyma.com to
order them.

ARLINGTON, MA (October 1, 1999) Macsyma Inc has rejoined
its former corporate family Symbolics Inc. in an
acquisition occurring earlier this summer. "Macsyma and
Symbolics are natural complements to each other for
technical and scientific computing," said Robert Berman,
President of Macsyma Inc. "Macsyma provides an enormous
range of coverage in mathematics, physics, science and
engineering, while Symbolics Open Genera provides the best
platform for artificial intelligence and knowledge based
applications. Uniting them on the Open Genera platform
running on Compaq Alpha 64-bit workstations is a marvelous
opportunity to rapidly build and prototype ultra reliable
software for a wide variety of applications."

Macsyma Versions Include More Math, Better Help with
       Symbolics Genera.

Macsyma provides broad, user-friendly coverage of
numerical, symbolic and graphical mathematics. The version
2.4 has substantial improvements in integration, solution
of equations, sparse matrices, graph theory, special
functions, graphics, and other areas. Macsyma's unusually
smart help system has become even better, especially in
responding more precisely to users' natural language
questions on the PC. Macsyma 422 runs on Open Genera and
has the same math engine and on-line help.

Open Genera is the latest version of Symbolics Genera
LISP-based object oriented Operating System software. It
currently runs as Virtual Open Genera on top on a Compaq
Alpha 64-bit workstation with Compaq/Digital UNIX.

Shared User Interface is Easy to Use.

Macsyma and Genera share the same underlying LISP, which
makes debugging ultra-easy and reliable. The user interface
for on-line Help has the same hypertext links as the PC
version, but with a simpler pull-down menu interface. One
of the most convenient new features on the PC is automatic
matching of parentheses, already available on Genera, which
makes interpreting multi-line input much easier. The same
syntax and editing conventions are available in the Macsyma
input lines, or in the editor on Genera. Function
debugging, evaluation, translation or compilation are
available anywhere in the Open Genera environment for LISP
      or Macsyma code.

Macsyma is also available on Windows, Unix and Linux.

Macsyma 2.4 is available for Windows 95, 98, and NT.
Macsyma 422 for Unix - including Red Hat Linux - boasts the
same mathematics as Macsyma 2.4 for Windows but offers a
different graphical user interface. Macsyma 422 for Open
Genera is essentially the same math engine as Macsyma 2.4
      or 422 for UNIX.

Founded in 1992, Macsyma Inc. develops, markets, and
supports Macsyma symbolic/numeric math software and PDEase
finite element analysis software. For more information,
visit the Macsyma Web site at http://www.macsyma.com. For
more information about Symbolics, visit the Symbolics Web
      site at http://www.symbolics.com.

Inc. MathHelp , MathTips , NumKit , DataViewer , and

      owners.
