This message didn't make it through my anti-spam filter. (The word
"LISP" or lots of other words like "SYMBOLICS" work.) I'm catching
more than one spam a week with this filter, by the way. All my nasty
notes to AOL and other places this is coming from don't seem to do
much good. It always seems to be Krazy Kev that is the source of them
all.

Subject: Hardcopy
I'm trying (don't laugh) to use a DECWRITER-III as a printer.
Everything seems to work ok, except the output always gets chopped off
around 1k to the end of the file. I assume this is because the
printer is receiving a signal to end before it is finished printing
its buffer.
Is there any easy way to make the hardcopy system pause at EOF long
enough to allow the printers buffer to drain before it closes the
stream?
the serial stream code does this automatically without your intervention.
Also, I can't seem to get any flow control to work, so if I try to
print at anything above 600 baud I lose characters. Any ideas?
One more thing: hardcopy seems to like to spit out a blank page after
every page it prints. Setting the page length in the namespace to
most-positive-fixnum fixes this, but this seems a rather kludgy
solution.
Thanks for whatever pointers anyone has on these problems.

i assume you are trying to use the console serial port.
if memory serves the console serial port has severe problems.
these are related to ancient hardware design of the 36xx and
were never fixed. i have gotten the console port to work in
some circumstances with a good deal of attention, however i
would not suggest it as the port of choice.
the bulkhead port(s) on the other hand seem to work reliably.
i have successfully connected all sorts of devices (including
synchronous modems) to my XL1200 bulkhead port.
i suggest you try one of these.
