Closed Object Boundaries from Scattered Points
Remco C. Veltkamp
CWI, Amsterdam
Computational Morphology is the analysis of form by computational means.
This discipline typically uses techniques from Computational Geometry and
Computer Aided Geometric Design.
This presentation is about one aspect of Computational Morphology: the
construction of a two-dimensional or three-dimensional closed object boundary
through a set of points in arbitrary position, i.e. through scattered points.
New results have been developed in four stages of the construction process:
1. the $\gamma$-neighborhood graph, which describes the structure of a set of
points;
2. an algorithm for the construction of a polygonal or polyhedral
boundary, which is based on the $\gamma$-neighborhood graph;
3. the flintstones scheme, a hierarchical scheme for polygonal and polyhedral
approximation and localization;
4. schemes for a smooth piecewise cubic boundary, which split Bezier
triangles into sub-triangles.
