Anyone notice there is a major rat infestation on the quad? Primarily
near baker, and olin. Or are we following CWRU policy and waiting to the
very last moment to get something implemented? Like waiting for the rats
to appear in the buildings when it starts snowing.

And besides these newsgroups (which no one in facilities or maintenance
reads), where else did you report it?

Problems get fixed faster if they're reported to something approximating the
appropriate person. Hell, even calling the operator and asking for
facilities would probably get you in the right direction.

I've only seen one rat-like creature around Olin in the past couple of
years, and I tend to be around a bit in the evenings on friday and saturday
nights (due to film society).

How many have you seen?

The University has a contract with various exterminators to take care
of these sorts of things. From teenie creatures to giant ones!!

Call 2580, which is the Plant Services Customer Service Center.
They should be able to hook you up.

Joel

PS...They were creeping around Yost last night, too!

For what it's worth, I've seen three. One was between Baker and Adelbert,
and two were on the quad near Stro.

Plant services knows about it. I have seen some pretty bigs ones. They
make 'Big Ben' look small. (I think that was the name of the big rat in
Willard).

You know discussions like this are exactly why I should keep lurking. I
doubt I'd have heard about this reading the alumni magazine. This is
real news alumni should know. :) For some reason the alumni mag rather

In reply to myself. Way to go dumbass; Nimh is how you spell it, and
it's Case not CASE or C4S3 cause we do not want to imply there are

You would think so, wouldn't you? But they're actually insisting
everybody refer to it (in html, anyway) as CASE, but with the "ase"
being in small caps. So all four letters are capitalized, but the C is
normal sized while the ASE are smaller. They're very strict about it,
we're not allowed to display "Case" any other way unless it's part of
the full "Case Western Reserve University" name.

Yes, because I'm sure that just looks sooo much better to everybody
(and will certainly be the deciding factor for many prospective
students). Don't ask me, I don't get it.

so it should be
 _

\_ASE

if it's just in plain ascii, right? ;)

By using Cascading Style Sheets, particularly "font-variant:small-caps"?

CMIIW, but I think small caps is just for title-ish occurrences. Body
text occurrences are supposed to be capitalized normally.

I may be mistaken, but my understanding was that we're to display it
that way anytime we use the shortened form of the name.

Not all of the ITS pages validate, but I have to give major kudos to
the guy managing the ITS template now. Some consultants were paid to
create a new look and feel for ITS, and give us a template to create
that look and feel with. They instead gave us a zip file full of ASP
files (which we do not, and will not support), which was full of
horrendous code I wouldn't have wanted to touch with a ten foot pole.
But he converted it to static html (there was never any reason they
needed asp to begin with, they just used it for no apparent reason),
cleaned it up, made much more extensive use of CSS, and has actually
made an active effort when maintaining the template to keep it validating.

With something upper administration is so concerned with, it's rare for
them to worry about anything other than how it looks in IE, but he's
thrown that logic out and actually attempted to support the standards as
best as possible. I *really* respect and appreciate that.

And Rich, I love that you prefer standards compliance, and plain
vanilla pages, but have you considered looking into the *current*
standards? HTML 4.01 is a bit dated nowadays. =p Not to mention it's
downright sloppy compared to the stricter syntaxes standardized on now.
It makes for much cleaner, less ambiguous markup, that makes me wonder
why they ever allowed such loose interpretations of syntax requirements
in the past. And CSS is actually pretty cool. =) Looking over your
lego lab page (which is much cleaner than most HTML pages), I think
you'd only have to change a couple quick things for XHMTL 1.0 Strict.

i've seen both forms...
	http://www.cwru.edu/webdev/
uses Case (with no smallcaps)
	http://www.cwru.edu/its/
uses CASE (with a pseudo-smallcaps effect done using font-size (as
opposed to smallcaps... odd)
so i dont know which form is the "preferred" one
