That's either due to a change in government (Ala Shah and Kohemeni)
or they went and did something to another of our allies and thus,
incurred our collective wrath.

Not exactly, but something like that.

We helped them free themselves from Russia, but the problem was, we
LEFT them alone when we really should have stayed and helped them
bring about a democratic rule or something close.

So, we really have no one to blame, that a bunch of religious
zealots took over and basically helped the country into a deeper hole
then before. Then came 9-11 and this placed a target over them.

Reminds me of Iran when the Shah was booted. People thought "Oh boy!
We're going to live better now!" But man, did they have a major line
up in the execution sections when the Komeheni slammed his fist down,
along with his band of followers.

They went so far backward, they went far beyond the bend.
