Ran across this yesterday, and it seems to be pertinent:

Opponents of equal marriage rights for gays harp on the alleged need to
defend marriage from the threat of destruction by homosexuals. Marriage,
they argue, is the single most important stabilizing foundation in our
society "because it creates long-lasting relationships and thereby
strengthens and builds the community." But if marriage is such a
stabilizing influence, why should we exclude millions of people from its
domain?
